| The Mediterranean Association for Soil Health (Medash) is a non-profit organisation that was founded in order to spread to the public and the scientific community the idea that the quality of soil are equally important for the survival of humans as the quality of air and waters. It's aim is to contribute in the definition of the terms "soil quality " and "soil health" and to inform the public about the idea that healthy food can be produced in healthy soil without the use of synthetic chemicals. The members of Medash are individuals with many years of experience (from 15-35 years) in the relative sectors (farmers, agronomists, soil scientists, researchers, doctors, nutritionists, schoolteachers, professors of universities, sociologists, ethnologists, biologists, lawyers). Medash believes that people in order to be healthy should consume healthy food, which can be produced in a healthy soil with methods friendly to the environment. Those methods maintain satisfactory production output whilst at the same time improve soil productivity. Medash' motto follows Rodale Institute idea that "Healthy Soil = Healthy Food = Healthy People" , that is to say that human health is the final ring of "the chain of health" which begins from the soil and leads to the people via the food. Medash creates bridges of communication and coordinated efforts between teams of professionals that deal with the "chain of health": doctors, agronomists, geotechnical scientists, nutritionists, farmers, tradesmen, consumers, etc. Medash also coordinates collaborations between governmental and non governmental institutions, educational institutions and farmers, agronomists, teachers, and other teams on issues with regard to the health of soil, food and the ways that these are related with the people's health. Medash's programs aim in encouraging people to cultivate trade and consume biological food and in propagating to the consumers and mainly to the young people the idea that proper nutrition with healthy food is the basic way for improving human health.
With its actions, the MEDITERRANEAN ASSOCIATION FOR SOIL HEALTH also intends to:
Contribute with political and legal actions in the determination and the improvement of the institutional frame that concerns the production of rural products with methods that improve soil health and productivity. Medash already consults farmers on how to produce rural products with such methods. Assign, organise, coordinate or work out inventory and research programs and to issue cinematographic and television productions with regard to the above. Participate, execute and manage programs of environmental education that are financed by the Greek State , the European Union and other institutions, with particular accent in programs that concern students and pupils. Also to participate, execute and manage programs of environmental protection, exchange of experiences and know-how on issues with regard to methods of food production. |
